Getting started

How do I install Joya Home?
  1. On your phone, install Joya Home (the parent app) and create your home with Apple, Google or your email address. Your 7-day free trial begins.
  2. On your child's phone, install Joya Home Kids (free).
  3. In Joya Home, tap “Add a child” (see the next question).

Both apps are coming soon to the App Store and Google Play. Joya Home Kids on computers (Windows, Mac, Chromebook) and a web dashboard for parents will come later.

How do I add a child?
  1. In Joya Home, tap “Add a child” and type their first name. If you like, add their month and year of birth (useful for the weekly math test, can be changed later).
  2. Tap “Create the code”: a code and a QR code appear. They work only once and stay valid for 7 days.
  3. On your child's phone, open Joya Home Kids, type the code or scan the QR code.
  4. Do the rest together: a few permissions need to be granted (see iPhone or Android below).
On iPhone: what is Screen Time for?

On iPhone, it's Apple's Screen Time that pauses apps and filters adult websites. During installation, Joya Home Kids guides you step by step:

  1. Screen Time: the app requests the “child” permission, which you approve with your Apple ID. For this, your child's iPhone must be part of your Family Sharing group, with its own Apple child account. After that, your child can no longer delete the app on their own.
  2. Apps: on their iPhone, you choose the apps that moments pause, the ones that count toward the daily limit, and the ones that have their own limit (Apple only opens this list on the phone concerned).
  3. Notifications, so calls arrive right away.
  4. Location, if you've turned it on: choose “Always”.
On Android: which permissions?

Each step opens the right settings screen directly:

  • Accessibility (required): to pause apps at the right time and count time per app. It's also what reads website names, relaunches a search with the filter and spots worrying words, if you've left those options on.
  • Display over other apps (required): to show the break screen.
  • Device administrator (required): only a parent can then remove the app. Joya Home cannot erase or lock anything on the phone.
  • Battery (optional): some phones put apps to sleep; one tap is enough to prevent it.
iPhone or Android: what's different?
  • Android only: websites visited, alerts about dangerous content, time per app, approval of each new app, safe search, blocking the Play Store. Apple doesn't let any app read this information on iPhone.
  • iPhone only: blocking in-app purchases, and the family break on a parent's phone. On iPhone, new apps aren't approved one by one: you can block their installation.
  • Everything else works the same: calls, breaks, limits (daily and per app), challenges, missions, the weekly math test, the map, trips, the SOS alert, the hallway basket.

Day to day

How do I call my kids for “Dinner's ready!”?

Tap a moment (Dinner, Homework, Leaving, Bedtime) or write your own message, choose who you're calling, and add your voice if you like. Your message fills your kids' screens with a countdown; at zero, their phone goes on break for the chosen time, or until a set time (“Bedtime” until 7 am: the next morning if that time has passed). You see who saw the call and who answered “Coming!”. As long as a child hasn't seen it, the call comes back every 30 seconds.

During a break, can my child make calls?

Yes. Three buttons always stay open in Joya Home Kids: Calls (their phone app), Emergency (their country's emergency number, after a confirmation) and Alarm. And the “Alert my parents” button works at any time.

How does the hallway basket work?

In Settings, create your basket: choose the length of the break (“1 hr”) or an end time (“until 7 am”, the evening basket). Write it onto an NFC sticker with your phone, or print its QR code. Your child puts their phone on the sticker (or scans the QR code): their phone goes on break and you see it in your home. To get it back, they put it down again once the break is over, or you release it.

On Android, just put the unlocked phone on the sticker. On iPhone, they first open Joya Home Kids and tap “Put my phone down”.

What happens if my child turns off the protection?

Joya Home lets you know right away (“… turned off the protection”) and records it in the feed. There's no automatic punishment: it's up to you to talk it over with your child. In their app, a message invites them to turn it back on.

How do the per-app limit and new apps work?
  • Limit per app: in your child's profile, add “TikTok, 30 min a day”. When the limit is reached, the app goes on break until midnight. On iPhone, you choose the app from Apple's list, on their phone.
  • Time per app (Android): the day's total for each app, and the last 7 days.
  • New apps: on Android, tick “New apps: ask for my OK”; each installed app stays on break until you say yes. On iPhone, you can block the installation of new apps.
  • Purchases: block in-app purchases (iPhone) or the Play Store (Android).
  • Safe search (Android, on by default) and restricted YouTube: on Android, YouTube in the browser opens YouTube Kids; on iPhone, the YouTube website is blocked in Safari.
What can I see, and what does my child know?

You see their screen time, their battery, their requests, missions and challenges and, depending on your settings, their location and trips, and on Android the websites they visit, time per app and alerts with the sentence in question.

Your child has a “Your parents can see” list in their app that follows your settings exactly. No hidden tracking: that's the Joya Home rule. All the details are in the privacy policy.

The map, trips and the SOS alert
  • Location is off by default: turn it on in your child's profile. You'll then see their location and battery on the map, the family places, and their trips for today or the last 7 days with their stops. Trips are deleted after 30 days.
  • “Alert my parents”: your child keeps their finger pressed for 2 seconds, and you immediately get an alert with their location at that moment and their battery, even if location is turned off. They then see that you've seen it.
  • Low battery: you're notified once when it drops below 15%.
How do I add the other parent, the babysitter or friends?
  • The other parent: they install Joya Home, choose “I was given a code” and type the code you create. They have the same rights as you.
  • Babysitter, grandparents: choose “Sitter” and the length of access (12 hours at most). They can call, unlock the screen and answer requests, but not change settings. Access ends on its own.
  • Visiting friends: choose “Friends” and show the QR code. They scan it with Joya Home Kids and follow the house rules until midnight. Nothing is monitored on their phone. Still, remember to let their parents know.
We're separated: how do we set up two homes?
  1. Each parent has their own home in their Joya Home app.
  2. The parent whose home the child is registered in opens their profile and creates a second home code (valid for 7 days).
  3. The other parent types it into their own app: the child is now part of both homes.

Each home keeps its own rules and only sees what happens in it. The child moves from one home to the other when a parent taps “they're with me”, or automatically on arriving at the “this is our home” place, if both homes have turned on their location. One subscription is enough for them in both homes.

Playing and learning

How do challenges and forfeits work?

Seven games, live on both your phones: rock paper scissors, Connect 4, Snake, the quiz, mental math, blitz chess (each player with their own clock) and the knowledge duel. You can challenge your child, and they can challenge you. If they beat an adult, they win the planned screen minutes. If they lose and there's a forfeit, the forfeit becomes a mission: they do it, send a photo, you approve. If they don't do it in time, the penalty you chose applies (from 5 to 30 minutes). After a game, either player can ask for a rematch. Between brothers and sisters, it's for glory and the weekly score. The number of challenges per day can be set for the home and for each child.

What's the home quiz?

In Settings, write your own questions — the question, four answers, the right one — sorted by theme (Family, Memories, Holidays…). They slip into your home's Quiz game, or make up the whole game if you pick their theme when launching the challenge. Your kids never see the list, only the themes.

The champion of the week

Every game won during the week earns a point. On Sunday evening (7 pm by default, you can change the time), Joya Home announces the champion to the whole family, with the reward you chose. If there's a tie, there are several champions. Past weeks stay visible.

What's the weekly math test?

Turn it on in your child's profile (you'll need their month and year of birth: the level follows their age). Once a week, they take 20 calculations, each with a short timer; leaving the app during a calculation counts it as wrong. You set the difficulty (1, 2 or 3), the operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or a mix), the minimum score to earn time and the minutes per point above it. With the “with a parent present” option, they let you know they're ready and you tap “Start the test” in their profile: they then have 2 minutes to begin. You then see their scores, the details of each calculation, and a “to check” flag if the response times look odd — a hint, never a punishment.

You can also add other subjects to the test (dictation, vocabulary in a foreign language, general knowledge, logic, depending on their language): they share the 20 questions. Their mistakes are remembered and come back in the next tests and in practice until they master them. They can practice freely (10 questions, no reward) on their weak spots or on one subject. The knowledge duel is played like a challenge: everyone gets questions at their own level, so the adult doesn't win every time. In “My progress”, they see their curve, what they've mastered, what they still need to work on and their badges. And every Sunday at 6 pm, you get their weekly summary (if they did something that week).

What about the time piggy bank and “5 more minutes?”?

The time piggy bank saves the time your child earns (challenges, missions, accepted requests, the weekly test, and time you add yourself): they use it whenever they want, to push back their daily limit. Each deposit stays valid for 7 days by default (adjustable from 1 to 30 days), and they're notified the day before it expires. The piggy bank holds 2 hours at most by default (adjustable from 30 min to 8 hours): anything above that isn't added. It can never be used during a break: a call, a scheduled moment, the family break, the hallway basket or a forfeit penalty.

With “5 more minutes?”, during a break (a call, a scheduled moment or the family break), your child can ask you for 5 more minutes. You answer yes or no with one tap: yes gives them 5 minutes right away, then the break starts again on its own. With no answer within 3 minutes, the request expires. One request at a time, 3 at most per break.

Account and subscription

How much does it cost?

7 days free, then one subscription for the whole home, depending on the number of children: up to 3 children €5.99/month or €49.99/year; 4 children €7.99/month or €64.99/year; 5 children €9.99/month or €79.99/year; 6 children or more €11.99/month or €94.99/year. Every feature is included, the Kids app is free, Apple Family Sharing works, and one subscription covers the child in both their homes. If the subscription ends, your kids' phones are never blocked.

I forgot my password

On the sign-in screen, tap “Forgot your password?”: you'll receive a 6-digit code by email, valid for 15 minutes. If you signed up with Apple or Google, just sign in with them again.

How do I manage or cancel the subscription?
  • iPhone: Settings › your name › Subscriptions.
  • Android: Google Play › your profile › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions.

The subscription renews automatically until you cancel it, at least 24 hours before it expires. Deleting the app doesn't cancel the subscription.

How do I delete my account?

In Joya Home: Settings › My account › “Delete my account permanently”. Everything is explained on the Delete my account page.
